References to the Tesla Robo Van were reportedly shared by CEO Elon Musk during the company’s recent all-hands meeting, according to individuals familiar with the topics covered in the event. Apart from the Robo Van being capable of transporting large numbers of people, Musk reportedly highlighted that the upcoming vehicle would be designed to address the needs of passengers with disabilities.

This suggests that the Tesla Robo Van would be optimized for easy ingress and egress, making it perfect for passengers who may have difficulty getting into conventional vehicles. Features such as active air suspension, similar to the one used in the Cybertruck, would be particularly useful for disabled passengers as well, as they would make it easier for items such as wheelchairs to be loaded and unloaded from the Tesla Robo Van.
Considering that a conventional full-size van typically carries 12 people, Tesla’s upcoming vehicle may actually have uses beyond the company’s typical customer base. Elon Musk’s tunneling startup, The Boring Company, for one, has begun constructing its Loop systems in areas such as Las Vegas, and so far, the transport tunnels utilize vehicles like the Model Y and Model 3, which are only capable of carrying about four passengers at a time.
Elon Musk puts Tesla Van on the EV automaker’s to-do list.
A Robo Van that is capable of carrying a larger number of passengers would then be quite useful for The Boring Company, since the vehicle could significantly increase the Loop’s capacity. Interestingly enough, a Robo Van for the tunneling startup is not the craziest idea either, as back in 2017, The Boring Company released concept images of its planned people carrier. The concept images show a vehicle that’s akin to a van, though one that features some very generous headroom and enough space for lots of cargo.
While Elon Musk’s references to a Tesla Robo Van may be quite surprising for some, this is not the first time that the CEO has referenced a van in the EV maker’s list of upcoming projects. Back in January alone, Musk remarked that he thinks that Tesla is definitely going to make an electric van at some point while addressing an inquiry from RBC Capital Markets analyst Joseph Spak. Musk, however, highlighted then that creating a prototype of the vehicle would probably be fairly easy, but ramping its production would be extremely challenging.
Tesla Passenger And Cargo Vans Could Serve Many Purposes.
The time has come where Tesla should pull the trigger on coming out with a van. If Tesla incorporated all of its latest technology, then this future van could be the more attractive option as opposed to a Mercedes Sprinter.

Elon Musk has made it clear in the past that Tesla does plan to come out with a Tesla van at some point. Recent developments have shown that Tesla could capitalize on a huge opportunity by coming out with its own fleet of vans. Tesla has made the move towards becoming an electricity provider.

How Tesla Cargo Vans could be used.

First and foremost, Tesla could use some of the vans that are produced as service vehicles. One critique of the Tesla service program is that Tesla does not use its own van because that van doesn’t exist. Tesla instead uses a fleet of Ford Transit vans. There are many advantages to Tesla using its own vans. The vans could be made with hooks, latches, and compartments that are tailored to carry certain key tools.
Tesla could have one team of workers who fix in-home products such as the power wall which connects to solar panels. Tesla could then have another team of workers who specialize in working on passenger cars. In this case Tesla would have a home department and an automotive department.

How Tesla passenger can could be used.

The sky is the limit for a Tesla passenger van. These vans would be equipped with FSD, but a driver is probably still needed for the foreseeable future. These vans could be converted into a party bus kind of vehicle with Champagne flutes. However, one of the best ways these vans could be used is as Airport shuttles. As FSD gets better, these vans could just be set up to do continuous laps at major airports 24 hours per day. Tesla should figure out a way to make its cars just go to a supercharger. For example, these airport shuttles would eventually run low on charge. In this case, the car can drive itself to a supercharger if the battery range drops low enough.

A Tesla van is likely a few years away.

This could be seen as a missed opportunity for Tesla, but the reality is that Tesla needs time to come up with a van that is unlike any other. If Tesla came out with an off-brand version of the Ford Transit, then that could be seen as a failure. Luckily, Tesla probably won’t settle if they do decide to go down the van route.
